Labeling Guidelines
How to label patch panels and patch cables in a meetinghouse network install.
Patch panel labeling
Label each position accordingly:
P01-01 through P01-24.
The first two digits identify the patch panel (P01), and the last two identify the position on that panel (01–24).
If you have a 2nd new-work patch panel (extremely rare), label it
P02-01 through P02-24.
Black Work patch panel (bottom of rack): labels on the panel
carry over from the existing work / labels.
Patch panel cable labeling
Label both the near end and the far end of every patch cable.
Each label pairs the patch-panel position with the device it serves.
